Future investments
Mark Navratil and his son, Skyler
When I first started building an RV, I thought it would be a great way to spend time with my two sons. And, indeed, we did pound a few rivets. But by the time I started building, both kids were at or near the stage where girls are sexier than airplanes (it's an evolving formula but eventually airplanes become sexier again). Several threads in the last week have focused on the builder-spouse relationship, and while that's important, there's almost never any chatter about the benefits of a father who builds and a youngster who watches, then flies. And that's too bad because there's a lot of interesting stories out there. There's significance in this relationship and although guys don't talk about such things, it's hard to escape it in the pictures accompanying Mark Navratil's article in the July edition of EAA Chapter 33's newsletter called "Skyler Turns Five." I don't mean to go all "Dr. Phil" on you, but I'd like to collect some stories about father (or mother)-son (or daughter) experiences and what each gets out of it the building process... short- and long-term. There are very few treatises on the subject out there. (More)

Tackling the flap hole
Flap hole with flaps retracted It's a rather simple process but one of the areas where folks have to figure out what to do for themselves is the enlarging of the holes for the flap pushrod on the 7/9. Maybe we can do something about that. (More)

GPS of a different dimension
GPS display The reason it took me so long
to pick a particular GPS unit probably was that every time I had enough money saved up
for the GPS I thought I wanted, someone came out with a another feature on their unit that shifted my attention away from my previous decision. (Alex Von Bosse in EAA 1414 newsletter)

BUILDER QUICK Q & A & TIPS

Prevent water behind the panel
Water behind the panelHere's a way to prevent water from entering the avionics bay (behind the panel) when you open the canopy in rainy weather. The cover is made of waterproof lightweight fabric (almost like the fabric a spinnaker for a sailboat is made of) and it's mounted with velcro. (Olav Frog on RV list photo share)

TruTrak pitch servo mod
TruTrak servoI just got done installing the 2nd revision of torque enhancement for the pitch servo. This one is a bit different, but very easy to install. It's a wheel with cables attached to a moving rail. One end gets a rod end, which isn't all that critical to get to the proper length, as long as the wheel can go full-travel in both directions. The wheel is held in by a tight cable. (Tim Olson on myrv10.com)
