My other plane
is a B-1 bomber

Lost in all the hubbub
of the RV-12, the BBQ, the Beach Boys and the products was the story
of Kyle Wilson, an RV-7A builder from Niagra, Wisconsin. Wilson was
at the controls of the B-1 bomber as it flew by Oshkosh. But the real
story is the journey Wilson took to get there. (More)

A day in the life
of Palmetto flight
The
day had been a long day. It all started some months ago when the FBO
manager of an airport near Columbia asked if there was any chance the
local RV folks could do a fly by and have the RVs on display for a little
while at an upcoming "open house". (James
Clark in "Contact")

Front
axle and fork wear issue
Back when I just had installed my wheel fairings during or just after
my 25 hour flyoff period, I had heard about someone being concerned
or having issues with the sleeves around their axle rotating and wearing
on their forks I called Van's for myself and told them that I had heard
about this issue, and that they had some parts that could be requested
or sent out. The person I talked to had no idea what I was talking about
and didn't seem to think there was an issue. So, satisfied for the time
being, I thought I'd watch it and see how it went. (Tim
Olson on myrv10.com).

phraseology
Do you get nervous on the radio? Me too. After a slight delay to handle
a family matter, I arrived at Oshkosh just in time to do my very first
radio interview. And I mean just in time. The radio interview was at 12
noon and I didn't get there until 11:30 a.m. or so. There's nothing like
being in a hurry and doing something for the first time to make you nervous.

wants to drive 4 hours when
you can fly in an RV and get there in under an hour? It all
came together when I suggested we make it happen at Tieton Airstrip,

it as a lovely airplane camping spot. -- Randall

BUILDER QUICK Q & A & TIPS |
|
Local
battery grounds
When space and/or weight-and-balance considerations for your airplane
call for mounting one or more batteries remote from engine instead of
on the firewall, you not only have to provide conductors for carrying
the hot (+) terminals of the battery(ies) forward, the negative (-) terminals
need to find your electrical system ground as well.
Since day-one, aircraft
with electrical systems have (like automobiles) used the vehicle's metallic
structure as a ground return for many electrical system components including
the battery. From the perspective of gross functionality this technique
has worked well. But, since we in the OBAM aircraft world are both more
sensitive to (and able to adjust designs for optimum performance with
respect to noise or cost of ownership issues that arise later for having
to find and fix 'fuzzy' ground joints), there is value in considering
exactly which devices might share a common airframe ground without risk
of increased noise. (Bob
Nuckolls on Shop Notes)

Rolling your own landing lights
I thought I'd share how I'm making and installing my landing lights in
case someone wants to copy them or build 'em better than I am doing. They
are somewhat like the Duckworks installation, but I'm doing it my own
way. I have purchased everything I'm gonna need to install them, and I
think it cost me about $40 TOTAL for two landing lights, one on each wing.
I have not upgraded the bulbs to the Silverstars yet, but plan to. (Chad
Jensen on Rivetbangers.com)
