MESSAGES
The Hotline this week is small because I just got home from Oshkosh and it's all Osh all the time. This newsletter was scheduled to come out on Tuesday, but I thought it best to work to get it out on Saturday. I'm leaving on vacation for two weeks, so I don't expect to resume regular Hotline distribution until approximately August 22. If you're in the New England area and you've got time for a visit, please e-mail me.

Oh, Oshkosh!
The most talked about RV

Where to begin? The huge RV BBQ that established the mantle of the "largest gathering of RV builders at Oshkosh"? The unbelievable formation flying of RVers that had the pros dropping what they were doing? The RV-12? The Raptor? In the "Oshkosh Diary," I solve the dilemma by starting the day I got there and ending the day I left, which was today. (More)

RV-12 makes debut at Oshkosh
RV-12 It's not finished yet, but the plane Van's said wouldn't be at Oshkosh was at, umm, Oshkosh. Was it a hit? People looked at it, but few surveyed said they'd be buyers. Only three hands went up at the Van's dinner when Van asked who'd be interested in it. The demographic pouring over it at the tent -- obviously an informal survey -- seemed to suggest an appeal for older fliers. But during the week, Van bristled at the question of why it doesn't have flush rivets (it doesn't need them) and lamented the possibility that someone would put a too-large engine in it.

Matched-hole tooling comes to the RV-8
RV-8 Van's Aircraft has now added the RV-8 to the models featuring matched-hole tooling. "This kit is completely compatible with all wing and empennage kits since the beginning of time. All RV-8/8A Standard Fuselage Kit orders placed during and after Airventure 2006 will be filled with matched-hole kits," according to the company press release. (See release in PDF)

Fixing the RV-10 heat problem
At his forum on Wednesday, Van's did not at all dismiss the reported problem with heat build-up in the RV-10 "tunnel." He said it was difficult to replicate and ascertain its potential for seriousness in their own 10 because they don't fly the 10 in hot areas of the country. But some builders are concerned about a heat build-up where there are few lines. Glen Thompson is one of them, and he says it should be an AD. (More on VAF)

Expercraft and Hotline in partnership
RV Builders Hotline is going to work with Rob Riggen of Expercraft to provide additional resources in production of the Hotline. We haven't worked out complete details yet but his program will allow easier subscription maintenance, the provision of a newsletter consistent with anti-spam laws, and make it easier to provide news of interest directly from builders using Expercraft's logging tool.

   PICTURE OF THE WEEK
Jeff Point at work. This is the view most pilots flying into Oshkosh see of RVer Jeff Point -- his backside on a scooter. He's the lineman who guides Oshkosh arrivals to their parking spots. It's not easy and the fact he and others make it look easy is a tribute to their work. I watched him do his thing one day this week and he was one of the best shows there. A sea of hundreds and hundreds of airplanes gets in and out of Oshkosh because of his work.
