Steve Formal's RV-8
Each week, your editor peruses hundreds of EAA chapter Web sites, looking for monthly newsletter mentions of an RV. It's always great to stop by EAA Chapter 35's site in San Antonio. They have a terrific chapter and a great newsletter. It's also a chapter in transition as both the president and newsletter editor are relocating. But there was one last -- terrific -- issue, including this profile of Steve Formal's N628RV. One useful observation was this one: "anytime you deviate from the plans, it has a domino effect." Big crowd expected at Oshkosh BBQ
The 2005 gathering Over 150 people have registered for the RV Builders Family Reunion BBQ, to be held at Camp Scholler on Wednesday July 26, during the EAA AirVenture at Oshkosh. I talked to chief cook Darwin Barrie last Sunday, somewhat nervous about how big the BBQ is now. "Ah, I've cooked for that many people before," he assured me. He also thinks we should have another propane gas grille. Got one? Here's the latest instructions. Oh, and ... bring chairs.

Where to mount the strobe power supply?
Power supply
Primer has its place in bulletin board lore, but the question of where to put a power supply for a lighting system is another subject that's asked often, with never a definite answer. On the RV-List this week, however, there was a very informative thread on the topic. (More)

Formation clinic in Redmond
Ready for practiceRandy Lervold and Mike Wilson organized the clinic, held last Friday through Sunday in central Oregon. "We had ground school all Friday morning, flew two missions Friday afternoon, then all day Saturday and concluded the event Sunday morning with an 11-ship." Randy told Van's Air Force.

A Comparison of the Safety Record of GA, Experimental and RV
On a flight hour basis, an experimental aircraft is about three times more likely to have an accident than a general aviation aircraft. Moreover, if you have an accident in an RV, it is 50% more likely to be fatal than if you have an accident. (Brian Moentenich in EAA 105 July newsletter)

BUILDER QUICK Q & A & TIPS

Installation of magnetos
Prior to installation, the magneto must be placed in the "E Gap" position. The method for doing this is different on different magnetos (Homebuilders Corner - EAA 62 July newsletter)

Tunnel tips
I wanted to pass on a suggestion for those looking to keep their RV 10 TUNNEL cool. Take your Black & Decker Wet vac and hook the hose to the blower/discharge air. Then place the hose over one of the heat vents on the firewall simulating hot air blowing into the cabin. Close the vents and see if air is still entering the cabin with the vents shut and the wet vac blowing air into the vent on the firewall side. What we discovered was a lot of air was entering the OPPOSITE vent when both were closed. The air was coming in under the hinge on the vent door. When I placed a small aluminum divider between the air vents on the firewall the air ceased leaking into the cabin tunnel. After playing with a few DEFLECTOR designs, I used the inside mounting bolt on the vent box to hold a deflector in place and then also put an 1/8 inch deflector inside the vent box so air could not sneak under the front of the vent door. This should solve the problem with HOT air entering the Tunnel with the vents CLOSED. There still may be a Radiant heat problem but insulation on the firewall and tunnel floor and silicone between the firewall and vent box helps for Radiant heat. I have pics if anyone is interested.
