Flying Stories

"Spring 2006 in my home town of Carlsbad, New Mexico has been brutal. Most days have been over 100 degrees with many in the mid and high 100s. I decided I would get out of town for a week to some place cooler. After considering a few of the nearby high elevation locations, I decided on Flagstaff, Arizona for a cool weather place that had plenty of interesting things to do nearby. I had driven through Flagstaff a few times, but had never spent time there." (More)

Tragedy strikes Wisconsin RVator

Chris Good and his wife, Sue, shown while vacationing in Hawaii

A longtime pilot from Wisconsin died last Sunday morning after his single-engine plane collided with another plane while landing in formation at an air show in Peru, Ill., officials said. The planes were flying in a four-aircraft formation from Poplar Grove, Wis., into the Illinois Valley Regional Airport in Peru.

The pilots were attempting to land about 8:50 a.m. when one plane bumped the other one. One plane, piloted by Christopher J. Good, 55, of West Bend, Wis., went into a nosedive and hit a grassy area northeast of the airport.

Funeral services will be held today at 4 (CT) at St. James Episcopal Church in West Bend, Wisc. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Chris' name be made to the EAA Chapter 1158 Scholarship Fund c/o EAA Chapter 1158, 310 Aerial Drive, West Bend, WI 53095.

Boone fly-in
Over IowaThe hub of mid-American's RV-flying force Boone, Iowa last Saturday. John Roberts of Williamsburg, Iowa sent along some presents. "Tom Olson from Cedar Rapids was kind enough to give me a ride up in his RV6A and Tom Caruthers from CR also gave my son Luke a ride up in his RV7A. Steve Ciha joined in flying his RV7A. It was a good time and I shot a few photos on the way up, a few while there, and a few on the way home," he said. Fortunately by "a few" he means 120. (See the images)

"Mom first got off the ground in the late 1960s, when my dad told her that he planned to become a private pilot. was a bit perplexed when she announced she was taking up flying again. She said she found a capable plane: an RV 10."(Atlanta Journal Constitution)

Talking airspeed indicator
Dave and Mom
This week RV-6 pilot Jim Van Laak, who has not been enamored of AOA instruments, wrote a very impressive and useful review of the Talking Airspeed Indicator when he was given one to try out for a bit. Now he's a fan. Unfortunately it didn't make it to the Web version of the list so you'll have to read it here. (RV-List)

The world's most helpful table of contents
Paul Valovich was kind enough send along a project of his. "When I started my RV-8A QB, I realized early on that I really didn’t know what I was doing, so wanted to use the experience of others to avoid as many “Life is hard, but life is a lot harder when you’re stupid” mistakes as possible. I therefore started assembling into a Word document items of interest from the Matronics RV and Aeroelectric lists. The idea was to have an alphabetically indexed file that is easily accessible. It has grown to 300+ subjects – and is titled RV Postings I." It's 250 pages and it's been posted to the "builder's tips" file area of the YahooGroups site. (More)
