Flying Stories

Trip to Yellowstone in an RV-10
As we got midway across SD, I was impressed by the beauty of the seemingly barren landscape. It got very interesting as we started to approach the Black Hills. It had been probably over 25 years since I've been in these parts of the country, and I had no memories of how beautiful it was. (More)

MESSSAGES

Next week's newsletter
Because of the Minnesota Wing of Van's Air Force meeting at SteinAir on Saturday (6/17), I'm going to delay publication of the Hotline until the afternoon. This should allow me time to add same-day details of the program to the Hotline.

NEW BUILDER WEB SITES

Tom & Martha's 9A
We made the commitment. Martha says, and I agree with her, that we can accomplish what ever we set out minds to ... even a project of the magnitude of completing a complex kit aircraft that will in 18 to 24 months carry us aloft to new adventures.

Mark Phillips' 6A
Thanks to Expercraft, I am offering my experience here for the following reasons:
1. Hopefully show that if I can pull this off, so can you!
2. Share lessons learned
3. Possibly stimulate some "outside the box" thinking, and
4. Show that this really ain't rocket science- If you enjoy a real challenge, possess decent mechanical skills, a fair amount of discipline and dedication, and are interested in meeting some really fascinating people, this trip's for YOU!

An evening at Van's
Benton Holzwarth chronicles EAA 105's trip to Van's in the "home wing's" monthly newsletter
Airplanes lined up at Van's headquarters

"The chapter held what is becoming our 'annual' meeting at Van's Aircraft factory on the Aurora airport. It was a nice evening, with several planes flying in, and about 100 or so folks attending. It was what I've come to expect, being now my third visit to the place -- a generous supply of pizza, a chance to see what's new in the Van's accessory catalog and a peek at what my garage would look like if I hit the lottery." We had about 40 RVs from all over Europe. The countries from which RVs came were France, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and the usual large contingent from the UK. It was probably the first time outside of North America that there were 7 RV8s present at one time at a Fly In. (Barry Ward on VAF)

Van's announces OSH dinner
The Pioneer Inn is no more, but the Van's annual Oshkosh banquet lives on. It'll now be held at the EAA Nature Center, tent #2. Tickets are on sale at Van's for $20. It's quite the shindig, with a terrific catered dinner. (Note: Do not confuse this event with the RV Builders BBQ the night before)

RV Lists add enclosure support
Matt Dralle, the brains -- and heart -- behind several of the RV lists. Has added "enclosure support" functionality to some of the most popular RV lists. This will allow pictures and attachments, with a few exceptions. (More)

Tom Greene pedals more than planes
Tom GreeneVan's Aircraft President Tom Greene took the scenic route home from Sun 'n Fun, according to an article in the latest RVator. He planned to ride his bike from Florida to Texas, where the capable hands of Bob Avery would put him on a plane home to Oregon. Did he make it? "yes, my wife, Susan, and I did make it from Florida to Texas," he reported in an e-mail this week. " I have attached a rough itinerary of the trip (click for a spreadsheet) and we are going to publish an expanded version in the next RVator. A great trip and many thanks to Bob and Judy Avery for picking us up before we had to tackle the Ft. Worth Dallas traffic... and for getting us to the airport for our return to Oregon."

AeroElectric Chapter 8 updated
From Bob Nuckolls: "Chapter 8 of the Connection has been updated with the corrected temperature rise data in the figures. For a limited time, folks can download and print a complete replacement for Chapter 8." (See PDF)

What's Garmin got?
Garmin 396A $200 price reduction this week in the cost of the Garmin 396 portable GPS has renewed speculation that Oshkosh will see an unveiling of some spiffy avionics. A posting a few weeks ago quoted Jim Younkin as saying "don't buy any avionics until Oshkosh," suggesting something "big" is in store. According to one poster on a bulletin board, "Garmin has the 496 in BETA test as we speak. Same size as a 396. It has a higher resolution display and the AOPA airport database."

Vibration control
Vibration controlThe whole idea behind vibration control is to isolate that which is vibrating (typically the engine and/or propeller) with that which you want to protect (say the airframe, instruments or pilot) see Figure 1. The main idea here is to dissipate the vibrational energy into heat. (EAA Chapter 602 Logbook)

BUILDER QUICK Q & A & TIPS

Measuring current draw
I am building an experimental airplane, with an ‘all electric’ panel. This includes both the
instrumentation and the engine ignition/fuel supply. Needless to say, I am concerned with current draws, and endurance in the event of an alternator failure. To that end, I wanted to be able to measure the actual current draw of each device in the plane as that will allow me to know what the drain on the battery will be if needed. (Bill Schertz in EAA Chapter 153 June newsletter)

Instrument hole cutting
From the RV-List comes this piece of advice, "After experimenting with several different things, I found that a (baby size) router used for laminate trimming worked the best for me. I made a wooden jig for the two rectangular holes needed for the EFIS and AOA mounting and the results turned out very nice, almost as good a as a CNC milling machine. (More)

ACCIDENT REPORTS

NEW INCIDENTS

AZ: RV-6A N36XP (Superior Air Parts). Thursday 6/8. Landed on road under unknown circumstances. (Data)

ASK VAN'S
Q: I'm using the Airflow HP fuel pump and the manual trim cable is a tad short. But if I don't thread it through the 708 bulkhead, it works out fine? Is this acceptable.

A: With the FI pump it's possible for the standard manual trim cable to be too short, though some guys have made it work, maybe by missing out the 708 bulkhead, which wouldn't be a problem. Alternatively you could exchange the cable for the 191" RV-8 one. That is 10" longer though, which may be too much, though it has also worked for some. The hole is the rear spar of the HS is too small for a bushing and the cable should be RTV'd there. -- Gus Funnell
