| Flying Stories |
| We
took off and headed north. We could see the heavy rain showers
off to the west and a small batch off to the east but sure
enough, there was a path between the two. We picked up a
light mist as we passed under the clouds but kept moving
forward. The radar indicated it was clear on the other side
and the visibility was still good. 20 minutes later we were
wheels down at Lake Elmo Airport (21D). (N523RV)

| HOMEBUILDING
IN THE NEWS |
| Randy
Bush has already logged about 977 hours on his airplane. And
this is all before it ever gets off the ground. First, he
has to finish building it. Bush started out building radio
control aircraft models, but now he's graduated to the real
thing. (The

OK, class, let's
build!
At Cal Polytech, students in Professor Dan Biezad’s
aero classes are learning firsthand how an airplane flies, by building
one.

The exact aircraft model we are building is Van's RV-7A with slider
canopy. The
project is both unique in that it was student initiated and funded starting
in 2003. The Aerospace Engineering Department at Cal Poly, SLO is working
to revitalize its "hands on" approach to undergraduate engineering
education by introducing manufacturing and fabrication "kits"
into its laboratory curriculum.
Twice a year, we
offer a course similar to RV Assembly Workshop designed to provide familiarity
with aircraft tools and basic sheet metal work. Currently, the aircraft
is located in the aero hangar on-campus where students come to work.
The aircraft will be largely student-built and we hope to see the airplane
fly once complete. -- Thanks to Joon Kim. (More)
Working with metal
From the
April issue of The
Cleco (EAA 393), comes details of a seminar from Bruce Seguine.
Not RV specific per se, but interesting nonetheless. The issue also
has details about moving a GlasStar from home to hangar.

How to register
your homebuilt
When registering
an aircraft with the FAA, remember you are dealing with a government
office, so we want to make sure that everything is right the first time.
The number one rule is to not make enemies. These people are in complete
control of your aircraft registration. - Mel Asberry (EAA

EFIS
I'm building hours flying behind one and several other chapter members

armed with a bit of knowledge and experience, I would like to comment
on the implementation and use of the most popular EFIS systems. (Michael

The kit
kit
Are you into kit airplanes; the small ones? Models? Lots of RV builders
and they have a head start on building the bigger versions because they
know how to turn two-dimensional drawings into a three dimensional thing.
There's actually an RV-6A model. And, on this site, some good video.

Lightning
strikes on props
An April shower brings thunder to the skies and lightning leads the way!
Hopefully you’re not caught flying your airplane in a thunderstorm
but if you do get caught, my explanation in this article will help show
you what to look for when performing your preflight inspection on the
propeller and what to do about it if a lightning strike is found. (EAA
