The
Amazing Flying Machine

Paul Dye, left, chats with Minneapolis-area RV expert
Alex Peterson. One of several RVators attracted by Paul's new RV8. "That
thing looks fast just sitting there," one said.
One
thing about an RV, it attracts a crowd. The fact it attracts mostly
guys is a bug we'll have to work on. It didn't long for the RV-8 to
attract an audience when Paul Dye of Houston landed his at Anoka County
Airport near Minneapolis last weekend. They were impressed. And Paul
still is too, even though he's been flying since last fall. Last weekend
he went for a short trip, to Minnesota. Even with a fuel stop, he was
door-to-door in about 5 hours. "Total Fuel burn for the trip up
was 49.9 gallons, which works out to about 18 nautical mpg – a
lot better than my Ford truck, and a WHOLE lot quicker!" Paul said
in a message on VAF. (Go
to front page and CTL-F "dye". It's scrolling down quickly).By
the way,the most impressive thing about Paul's plane? He built it while
ordering only one replacement part from Van's ($8).

RV
legend Eustace Bowhay dies
Eustace died
Tuesday of apparent complications from a stroke. "He joined the
RV ranks in the 1990s by building C-HAY, a 180 hp RV-6 which he flew
on wheels, floats and amphibious floats. In the RV community he found
many low time pilots venturing into the world of relatively high performance
and became their mentor. At the factory, Van’s people learned
to listen carefully to the tall, white haired, slightly deaf Canadian
fellow with the suspenders. There was a little “eh?” and
a little “oot” in his speech, as well as a whole lot of
humanity, wisdom and humor," wrote Doug Reeves in a recent tribute

The idea came
from Jeff Gross because of his own experience as a new builder. Looking
back on his experience, Jeff explains that he never got to ride in an

I learned so much about the RV-10 last time plus I just had plain fun
flying it that I decided to come back and improve. This time I came
back with my father-in-law and did we ever hit the two most perfect
days in Oregon ever. (Scott

RV-9A Videos
Bryan Wood has shot a couple of videos of his RV-9A. One is his take-off
behind a Turbo Lance. The second is second is
taking off from runway 13 at Reid Hillview in San Jose, showing
typical RV9A performance. All plenty of time for downloading.
