In the newsletters

"A few weeks ago I gathered the nerve-for the fist time-to spin my RV-7. I have done them in each of the two RV-4s I previously owned and agreed with Van Grunsven's assessment that to spin the RV-4 for the first time is to scare the fire out of yourself. The little thing winds-up fast! The Earth rotates at an amazingly fast pace." (Denny Mercer, EAA Chapter 1114 Newsletter - PDF)

From the editor

If you subscribed several weeks ago and received only one issue, rest assured they've been sent but you didn't receive it.

I believe it's because some ISPs and virus software has been intercepting the Hotline because of some script in it that drove the drop-down menu for archived (past) issues. So with this edition, all scripts have been removed from the e-mail and I trust this will clear things up

If you didn't get this newsletter via e-mail, you subscribed, and now you're reading it online, please contact me. I'll set up individual mailings outside the distribution list.

Remember, the Hotline is available in both html and pdf format. -- Bob Collins

SportPilot TV highlights Van's

Richard VanGrunsven, founder of Van's Aircraft, was featured in last weekend's edition of Sport Pilot TV, one of the better kept secrets on cable. The episode, filmed in 2005, featured an interview with Van and a little flying in the RV-10, which he called "the flying truck" of the fleet.

The show, which is intended for a very general overview of sport piloting, focused on Van's advice for deciding whether to build. "The first thing is to ask, 'is it really going to do what I want it to do?,' and the next question is, 'do I really have the capacility and time to build it?'" he said.

He described the fleet as "not gaudy, so we make up for that by attention to detail," citing the use of flush rivets, and the fairings on the landing gear, which he said are "a little tighter" than on a production aircraft. Though the episode was focused on the novice, he repeated his oft-repeated advice on attention to detail where speed is concerned. "It all ads up, a 1/2 mile (per hour) here, a mile there," he said. His favorite RV? The RV-8, he said.

Q & A

Q: Question. I notice that my rudder bottom fairing seems to be scored where several cuts should be. I also notice what appears to be a score line down the sides all the way to the aft. Is there a cut that's supposed to be made there too?

A: The rudder bottom is left tall and you are to trim it to the final size. the long score is the trim line, but I would approach it carefully. (Bruce Reynolds, Van's Aircraft)
